Watch: Amusing 2-Min Animated Short 'Dead Meat' About a Seagull

Seagulls gotta eat, too! I'm sure we've all seen that infamous viral video of a seagull scarfing down an entire hot dog in one gulp. Disgusting, but also kind of ingenious? This fun 2-minute animated short film called Dead Meat is inspired by that remarkable feat of consumption. Dead Meat is made by a filmmaker named Adnan Peer Mohamed, who is currently studying at the Vancouver Film School and created this project during his time there. Adnan explains that he "wanted to go for something short and silly with this and I'm hoping that you get a little 'heh heh' out of it!" This definitely should make you laugh! I'm impressed at how much of a story he tells within only 2 minutes of time with just a seagull, but that's the magic of filmmaking, especially with animation. And as with any good film, I already want to hang out more with these characters. Thanks to Vimeo Staff Picks for the ...

First Trailer for Disturbing Folk-Horror Film 'The Feast' from Wales

"There's a feast waiting for us." IFC Midnight has unveiled an official trailer for a twisted new horror film titled The Feast, filmed in Welsh and directed by Welsh filmmaker Lee Haven Jones. This one originally premiered at the 2021 SXSW Film Festival, and has been playing at numerous other genre festivals through the year, including at Beyond Fest and the Telluride Horror Show most recently. This horror feature follows a young woman serving privileged guests at a dinner party in a remote house in rural Wales. The assembled guests do not realize they are about to eat their last supper. Annes Elwy stars as the very creepy Cadi, she's joined by Lisa Palfrey, Caroline Berry, Nia Roberts, Julian Lewis Jones, Steffan Cennydd, Sion Alun Davies, and Chris Gordon. Not sure what exactly is going on, but it looks unsettling in many ways. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Lee Haven Jones' The Feast, direct from IFC's YouTube: IFC Midnight's The ...

Cam Gigandet & Bruce Dern in Gritty Western 'Last Shoot Out' Trailer

"I'm just trying to stay alive. I suggest all you do the same." Lionsgate has debuted an official trailer for a western action thriller titled Last Shoot Out, yet another new film from B-movie director Michael Feifer, also of A Soldier's Revenge and Catch the Bullet within the last year. The plot follows a woman who escapes her new husband's ranch after learning he killed her father. She hides out with a gunman named Billy Tyson at a remote outpost until he comes from her. Skylar Witte stars as Jocelyn, with a cast including Bruce Dern, Cam Gigandet, Michael Welch, Jay Pickett, & Brock Harris. Unfortunately it looks instantly forgettable, even with lots of shoot outs, another direct-to-video dump. Don't waste your time with this one. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Michael Feifer's Last Shoot Out, direct from YouTube: Cam Gigandet and Academy Award nominee Bruce Dern light up this gritty, intense Western saga of love, betrayal, and revenge. Soon ...

Another UK Trailer for Norwegian Film 'Hope' with Stellan SkarsgAY=rd

"I've been such a coward. I should've left you ages ago!" Picturehouse in the UK has debuted anther new official UK trailer for a Norwegian indie drama titled Hope, which originally premiered at the 2019 Toronto Film Festival a few years ago. This already opened in the US this spring and we featured a trailer earlier in the year, but another reminder that it's out is good for this one. Hope is an award-winning film written & directed by Maria SA,dahl, starring Stellan SkarsgAY=rd and Andrea BrA|in Hovig. Norway's selection for the Best International Feature Film at the 93rd Academy Awards earlier this year, though it didn't end up with a nom. Hope is based on the true story and experiences of director Maria SA,dahl whose terminal cancer diagnosis led to a nine-year hiatus from filmmaking. All about the relationship between artist-partners Tomas & Anja. It looks like such a deeply emotional film, I am very curious to see how ...

Paul Sloan Uncovers a Conspiracy in 'Every Last One of Them' Trailer

"Where's my daughter?!" Paramount has launched a trailer for a revenge action thriller titled Every Last One of Them, arriving direct-to-VOD this week if anyone wants to actually watch this. Paul Sloan stars as an ex-Black Ops soldier named Jake Hunter, who's desperate to find his missing daughter. As he uncovers the terrifying truth surrounding her disappearance, he goes on a merciless quest for revenge, bringing those responsible to justice. His search uncovers a larger conspiracy involving a Chinatown-esque capitalism deal over water rights. The cast includes Jake Weber, Taryn Manning, Mike Hatton, Michael Madsen, along with Richard Dreyfuss. This seems as trashy as they come. Not only does the footage look stale, but with the most bland and unexciting plot that has been done a thousand times before in so many better films. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Christian Sesma's Every Last One of Them, direct from YouTube: Ex-Black Ops soldier Jake Hunter (Paul Sloan) is desperate to find ...

Daniel Zovatto stars as "Damage", and is joined by Frankie J. Alvarez, Beau Knapp, Otmara Marrero, Juan Pablo Raba, Richard Schiff, Dax Rudnak, Ralph Rodriguez, Angeline Appel, Manolo Gonzalez-Vergara, and Veronica Gessa. This doesn't look like the greatest movie, but it does look authentic, made by people who actually know what it's really like to be a graffiti artist on the streets of Miami. And that makes a difference. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Jose ...

Watch: Villeneuve's 'Dune' Trailer Recut as David Lynch's 80s 'Dune'

"The unknown and the unbelievable meet." It's time for the US release of Dune this week! To celebrate the opening, Nerdist has launched a fun "remix" trailer that recreates this new Dune movie in the style of David Lynch's infamous 80s flop. Everyone knows that Lynch also brought Dune to the big screen in 1984, but the movie kind of sucks and it has been mostly forgotten (until now). Set in the distant future, the story in Dune about the son of a noble family entrusted with the protection of the most valuable asset and most vital element in the galaxy - the planet Arrakis, the only place in the galaxy where they can find "the spice". This new adaptation of the epic sci-fi stars TimothA(c)e Chalamet as Paul Atreides, with Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, plus Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Zendaya, Stellan SkarsgAY=rd, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, David Dastmalchian, Chang Chen, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, and ...

Can they defeat a twisted guinea pig named Lulu and save the Justice League and Metropolis from destruction? The main voice cast includes Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Kate McKinnon, John ...

Promo Trailer for Acclaimed Austrian LGBTQ Drama 'Great Freedom'

"You don't belong here." "And you do?" The Match Factory has debuted an international promo trailer for the Austrian drama Great Freedom, which originally premiered at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival this year to mostly positive reviews. Based on a true story about a prisoner. In post-war Germany, Hans is imprisoned again and again for being homosexual. The one steady relationship in his life becomes his long time cell mate, Viktor, a convicted murderer. What starts in revulsion grows to something called love. The film stars award-winning German actor Franz Rogowski (who's everywhere these days) as Hans, Georg Friedrich as Viktor, plus Anton von Lucke and Thomas Prenn. Early reviews of the film praise it in many distinct ways: "While it smoulders with indignation for the injustice that was perpetrated for so many years, Great Freedom is also a love story, a remarkable character study, and an absorbing meditation on what long-term imprisonment for a crime that is not a ...

Full Trailer for Marvel's Badass 'Hit-Monkey' Animated Series on Hulu

"Time to get bloody... Two dudes, two fates." Hulu has launched a full trailer for the new animated Hulu series called Hit-Monkey, another fairly unknown Marvel character getting his own show. It was initially conceived as part of a shared universe connecting to The Offenders, then it was decided it would be better as a stand-alone series. The teaser arrived a month ago, but this full trailer kicks WAYYY more ass than that first look. Doesn't even matter if he's an "obscure" character, I'm down for this. Marvel's Hit-Monkey series tells the tale of a wronged Japanese snow monkey, mentored by the ghost of an American assassin named Bryce (voiced by Jason Sudeikis), as he cuts a wide swath through the Tokyo underworld. The voice cast includes Olivia Munn, George Takei, Ally Maki, and Nobi Nakanishi. Uh yeah, this looks awesome! The animation looks good and the story seems fun, even though it's crazy dark and kinda weird. Bring it ...

Olivia Colman & Dakota Johnson in 'The Lost Daughter' Official Trailer

"Children are a crushing responsibility." Netflix has debuted the first official trailer for an acclaimed film titled The Lost Daughter, marking the feature directorial debut of actress Maggie Gyllenhaal. She both writes and directs this adaptation of the Elena Ferrante novel of the same name about two mothers who meet on a beach. The Lost Daughter premiered at both the 2021 Venice & Telluride Film Festivals this year, earning a number of rave reviews (ours included). A woman's beach vacation in Greece takes a dark turn when her obsession with a young mother forces her to confront the decisions of her past. Olivia Colman stars, with a cast including Jessie Buckley, Dakota Johnson, Ed Harris, Peter Sarsgaard, Dagmara Dominczyk, and Paul Mescal. This is one of my favorite films from the Venice Film Festival this year, I can't stop thinking about it. I adore the score AND performances AND the story, everything going on in this. Here's the official trailer (+ ...

Another Fun International Trailer for Reitman's 'Ghostbusters: Afterlife'

"What exactly is happening here?" "We need to find what our grandfather started." Sony Pictures UK has dropped off another international trailer for Jason Reitman's Ghostbusters: Afterlife movie, the next continuation of the original Ghostbusters series. (We also posted a full trailer + featurette earlier this year.) This is actually a direct sequel to the first two movies (from 1984 & 1989) and brings back the classic Ecto-1 and some of the original actors. Ghostbusters: Afterlife is set in a small town, where a group of kids and a teacher discover various connections to the original Ghostbusters from 30 years ago. The main cast includes Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, and Paul Rudd; with Bill Murray, Annie Potts, Sigourney Weaver, Dan Aykroyd, Bokeem Woodbine, and Ernie Hudson. This has been screening already and getting great reviews! Yes it's filled with nostalgia and takes us right back to the old movies, but it's a fun update that is filled with ...

First Australian Trailer for Jacques Audiard's 'Paris, 13th District' Film

"She drives me stupid crazy. I'm obsessed." Madman Films in Australia has unveiled an official trailer for the film Paris, 13th District, originally known as Les Olympiades. This is the latest film from award-winning French filmmaker Jacques Audiard (A Prophet, Rust and Bone, Dheepan, The Sisters Brothers) and it originally premiered at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. The film is a black & white story of young love in modern Paris - following three different stories of people living in the 13th district of Paris. Technically this is an adaptation of the graphic novel" Killing and Dying" by Adrian Tomine, a modern tale of love and friendship, co-written with LA(c)a Mysius and CA(c)line Sciamma. The full cast includes Lucie Zhang, Makita Samba, NoA(c)mie Merlant, Jehnny Beth, Camille LA(c)on-Fucien, Oceane Cairaty, and AnaA-de Rozam. This wasn't my favorite film from Cannes, but it does have some wonderfully modern takes on intimacy and sex and love that are nice ...

"Whence is that knocking?" Apple has debuted their own different teaser trailer for the film The Tragedy of Macbeth, the latest big screen Shakespeare adaptation coming this fall. This recently premiered at the New York and London Film Festivals, and is opening in theaters in December. A24 is handling the theatrical release (watch their trailer here), while Apple will debut streaming in early January. Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand co-star in Joel Coen's bold and fierce Shakespeare adaptation; a tale of murder, madness, ambition, and wrathful cunning. A Scottish lord becomes convinced by a trio of witches that he will become the next King of Scotland. The cast includes Bertie Carvel, Alex Hassell, Corey Hawkins, Harry Melling, Brendan Gleeson, Moses Ingram, and Kathryn Hunter. Another very short teaser, but the stunning shots from DP Bruno Delbonnel are pretty much all they need to show anyway. Take a look. Here's the new Apple teaser trailer for Joel Coen's The Tragedy of Macbeth, ...

DC FanDome Teaser for Sandberg's Sequel 'Shazam! Fury of the Gods'

"Bigger action sequences, bigger set pieces." Get a first look at the Shazam! sequel in the works. During the DC FanDome event this weekend, Warner Bros also revealed a first look at David F. Sandberg's Shazam! Fury of the Gods, a sequel to his 2019 superhero comedy starring Zachary Levi. Not too much is known about this sequel yet, except that Shazam will be battling Hespera & Kalypso, and will have a whole new "superhero family" on his side. In addition to Levi, the new cast features Helen Mirren as Hespera, Lucy Liu as Kalypso, Rachel Zegler, Meagan Good, Grace Fulton, and Marta Milans; along with Djimon Hounsou, Asher Angel, and Jack Dylan Grazer returning from the first one. This teaser is more of a behind-the-scenes sizzle reel, showing tiny bit of footage, concept art, B-roll, and shots of them filming. This actually looks good so far, the first one was quite fun. I hope it doesn't get too cheesy ...

Trawl of 90,000 studies finds consensus, leading to call for Facebook and Twitter to curb disinformation

The scientific consensus that humans are altering the climate has passed 99.9%, according to research that strengthens the case for global action at the Cop26 summit in Glasgow.

The degree of scientific certainty about the impact of greenhouse gases is now similar to the level of agreement on evolution and plate tectonics, the authors say, based on a survey of nearly 90,000 climate-related studies. This means there is practically no doubt among experts that burning fossil fuels, such as oil, gas, coal, peat and trees, is heating the planet and causing more extreme weather.

Texas schools are being told to teach aopposing viewsa of the Holocaust. Why? | Francine Prose

The question of what specific books and topics can and canat be taught is linked to a disturbing new law in Texas

Iave been trying to imagine what Gina Peddy could have been thinking when, on 8 October, she informed a group of Southlake, Texas, elementary school teachers that, if their classroom libraries included books about the Holocaust, students should also be steered toward books with aopposing viewsa.

The executive director for curriculum and instruction for the Carroll Independent school district, Peddy later explained that she was simply helping her staff comply with Texas House Bill 3979. Signed into law on 1 September by Governor Greg Abbott, the ruling prohibits educators from discussing controversial historical, social or political issues. Unfreezing the ice age: the truth about humanityas deep past

Archaeological discoveries are shattering scholarsa long-held beliefs about how the earliest humans organised their societies a and hint at possibilities for our own

In some ways, accounts of ahuman originsa play a similar role for us today as myth did for ancient Greeks or Polynesians. This is not to cast aspersions on the scientific rigour or value of these accounts. It is simply to observe that the two fulfil somewhat similar functions. If we think on a scale of, say, the last 3m years, there actually was a time when someone, after all, did have to light a fire, cook a meal or perform a marriage ceremony for the first time. We know these things happened. Still, we really donat know how. It is very difficult to resist the temptation to make up stories about what might have happened: stories which necessarily reflect our own fears, desires, obsessions and concerns. As a result, such distant times can become a vast canvas for the working out of our collective fantasies.

Letas take just one example. Back in the 1980s, there was a great deal of buzz about a amitochondrial Evea, the putative common ancestor of our entire species. Granted, no one was claiming to have actually found the physical remains of such an ancestor, but DNA sequencing demonstrated that such an Eve must have existed, perhaps as recently as 120,000 years ago. And while no one imagined wead ever find Eve herself, the discovery of a variety of other fossil skulls rescued from the Great Rift Valley in east Africa seemed to provide a suggestion as to what Eve might have looked like and where she might have lived. While scientists continued debating the ins and outs, popular magazines were soon carrying stories about a modern counterpart to the Garden of Eden, the original incubator of humanity, the savanna-womb that gave life to us all.
